DNA Says Love You: Episode 2

A trio of kids are drawing on a white cafe wall. When the boy is asked what he’s drawing, he responds that he’s drawing them. The boy is Le Chien, he then points to one of the drawings saying that it’s Yu He and the other drawing is Wen Wen.

Yu He says that she’s not that ugly, then Wen Wen teases Le Chien by saying that he drew an alien. The three friends laugh. A moment later Le Chien’s mom yells at him for drawing on someone else’s walls so the kids make a run for it.

Ten years later and the drawings are still there and strung on top of them are pictures of the trio. Yu He stands next to Le Chien looking at that same wall and she wonders what Wen Wen is doing now. That’s when a customer shows up so they both greet him. The customer sits down at a nearby table, Yu He goes to take his order.

The customer doesn’t know what they want when she asks, so Yu He asks them if it’s their first time at the cafe and if he needs to see the menu. The customer says yes to both so Yu He quickly goes through the menu with them.

However it seems the customer wasn’t quite paying attention so they apologize. The customer says that they have just returned from overseas and are still getting used to things. Yu He tellsthem that it’s not a problem and to take their time looking over the menu. (The customer is Amber).

Amber asks Yu He to help him choose something. Yu He goes back to the counter and asks Le Chien to choose something for their customer that has recently returned from overseas. Le Chien makes a latte with a cute little orange drawing as latte art. Yu He takes the mug over to Amber and tells him that it’s their chef’s signature blend, an orange flavoured latte.

Yu He then goes back to the bar where Le Chien has started editing his last video. Yu He laughs as she can’t believe that Le Chien still wants to use that video. Le Chien tells her that it seems like a waste not to use it, he just has to cut out that last scene. Le Chien also admits that they almost broke the camera while making that video.

Yu He sarcastically says that she’s grateful that the camera survived, although she can’t understand why her brother sponsors them. Chien Teng (her brother) says that he sponsors Le Chien and Ching Lung because he can see their potential. Le Chien proudly asks if Yu He heard that he’s got potential and the two bicker a little bit.

Amber comes up to them with his latte mug to thank Yu He for choosing the orange latte for him. Yu He corrects him, saying that it was the Chef Le Chien that chose the blend for Amber. Amber then mentions that he overheard that Le Chien was working on a video.

Le Chien tells Amber that he makes adventure videos and then posts them online. Amber informs them that he studied photography overseas and has an interest in adventure videos, would they like him to take a look? Le Chien readily agrees, while Yu He looks like she hopes Amber will laugh at the video too.

Much to Yu He’s disappointment, Amber thinks that the video is quite creative. Amber then goes over the reasons why he likes the video, while also supplying a few ideas on how to improve it. Le Chien is quite impressed with Amber’s views on his work. When Amber does reach the end of the video, he shyly says that it could use some work.. Le Chien reassures everyone that he’s going to cut that part out (Yu He laughs at it some more).

Le Chien thanks Amber for his help. Amber admits that he does he own photography and offers to help Le Chien anytime he needs it. The two spend more time together working on the video.

Later that night, Le Chien is eating dinner with his mother. Le Chien compliments his mother saying that not even the restaurant owner across the street can make noodles this good. His mom says that she raised him wrong, because he’s a picky eater. Le Chien offended says that he tried to pay her a compliment and gets scolded for it. Le Chien’s mom says that it’s the sauce that’s good not her noodles. (Dang product placement!)

She tells Le Chien that she bought a few extra packets so that he can make some himself when he’s hungry. She then tells Le Chien that she made a deal with a Grandma to go to southern Taiwan to learn some new recipes. She tells Le Chien that he’ll have to bring Yu He over to taste them.

Le Chien says that with the way his mom treats Yu He she’s becoming fat. He also says that Yu He is a tomboy and by the time his mom returns from her trip, no one will want to date Yu He. (Someone’s still mad she laughed at his video). His mom however says she doesn’t believe him because Yu He is absolutely adorable.

Le Chien then tells his mom about meeting Amber in the cafe and how Amber liked his video. Le Chien mentions that he’s thinking of inviting Amber along with him when he goes to find the Come Back Nunnery. His mom acts offended since he never invites her to come on his adventures but he’ll ask a guy he just met to join him.

After supper, Le Chien calls Ching Lung to tell him about Amber coming along on their adventure. Ching Lung thinks that Amber is against having a foreigner join them. Le Chien says that Amber only uses his English name because he lived in Great Britain for a time but that he’s not a foreigner.

Ching Lung tells Le Chien that he has double standards because he’s the one that said they wouldn’t bring outsiders with them when going on an adventure. Le Chien tells his friend that if he heard what Amber said about their video, the Ching Lung would like Amber too. Le Chien goes on to try and convince Ching Lung that bringing Amber along is a good thing, they might even get more footage with another person filming.

Ching Lung says they could’ve had that if Le Chien let him bring his boyfriend A’Guan. Le Chien complains that A’Guan doesn’t like outdoor adventures so it’s not the same thing. Ching Lung sulks on the other end of the phone so Le Chien tries to pacify him by saying that it’s just a trial run. Le Chien promises that if the two don’t get along then they won’t bring Amber with them the next time.

After getting Ching Lung to agree to having Amber come along on their adventure the two hang up. Le Chien and his mom go to the little altar to pay their respects to his dad. Le Chien’s mom also makes him agree to wearing an amulet as he will be spending his vacation time with Ching Lung and Amber instead of her.

She also says that if his dad hadn’t died so early, he would be the one lecturing Le Chien until his head hurt.

The next day at the cafe, Amber gets himself another orange latte while showing Le Chien his portfolio. Le Chien is impressed that Amber has taken so many photos himself. Amber says that he’s used to walking alone a lot, so he took a lot of simple photos. Le Chien thinks that the photos are amazing.

Le Chien asks if Amber uses any special equipment but Amber tells him that he just uses whatever is available. Le Chien is interested in one of the pictures and asks where it was taken. Amber says that the photo was taken at a mountain behind his old school, because there weren’t many trees there it made Amber feel sad.

Amber points out another photo that he took when the lake froze over. Amber says that the colour of the frozen lake looked magical. Le Chien asks if Amber went out onto the lake for that photo, and Amber admits that he did. Amber says that it was scary at first but in reality it was actually pretty safe.

Amber then points out another photo that he likes as he thinks it’s similar in style to what Le Chien is trying to do with his videos. Le Chien thinks that Amber is quite skilled at photography but Amber doesn’t agree. Amber says that he just hopes his photos can give Le Chien some inspiration.

Le Chien asks Amber if he doesn’t mind helping out. Amber replies that Le Chien can ask for his help anytime, then hands Le Chien a USB that has more photos for Le Chien to check out. Amber asks Le Chien if he’s decided on a new location for his next adventure. Le Chien admits that he has but that there isn’t a lot of information about it.

Le Chien admits that it will take some time to find the place that he’s picked and that they may never actually find it. Amber is curious about the location so Le Chien asks if Amber has heard of the Come Back Nunnery. Amber responds by asking if it’s the Come Back Nunnery on Lone Light Ridge. Le Chien is surprised that Amber has heard of it.

Amber says that he heard about it when he was younger but doesn’t know too much about it. Amber does remember that on the north side of the mountain base lives Grandma Hou Shan. Amber says that she knows a lot so it’s possible that she may know the route to the Come Back Nunnery. The two decide to go together to ask Grandma Hou Shan about it.

The duo head over to the old house. As they are standing outside, Le Chien asks Amber if he’s sure that this is the right place. Amber replies that it is but that he was brought there when he was younger and can’t be sure that Grandma Hou Shan is still there.

They approach the door and the door seems to open on its own.. so they head inside. They call out for Grandma Hou Shan but they are both pretty scared as it’s a little creepy. It doesn’t help that the door slams shut behind them making them both jump. Amber seems terrified but Le Chien being slightly less scared tells him that it was probably just the wind.

Grandma Hou Shan appears out of nowhere to tell them to have a a seat. That made Amber give startled jump. A little while later they are all calmly sitting down at the table while Grandma Hou Shan pours some tea. Amber apologizes for bothering her but explains that they heard she was quite knowledgeable which is why they are visiting.

Amber then tells her that they are looking for the Come Back Nunnery but they don’t know where to look and can’t find any information about it. Amber asks if Grandma Hou Shen knows of it. Le Chien quickly adds that his mother told him a legend about how many tried to find it but couldn’t. Le Chien even pulls out the old photo of it.

Grandma Hou Shan says that they won’t be able to find it. Le Chien is excited because it sounds like she knows where it is. Grandma Hou Shan says that though many want to go there, but never actually find it. Grandma Hou Shan says that something happened there a long time ago. Grandma Hou Shan narrates the story of A’Rong and Yen Ching.

Grandma Hou Shan says that during the early Republic of China there was a couple, A’Rong and Yen Ching. A’Rong’s family was poor so she worked for Yen Ching’s family since she was a little girl. The two grew up together so of course they became a couple despite their differences in status.

It comes as no surprise to anyone that Yen Ching’s family objected to him dating a poor girl but he ignored them as he wanted to marry A’Rong. Yen Ching even gave A’Rong a hairpin with swallow on it as a love token. However when the two were about to elope, Yen Ching’s parents found out and broke them up (Typical).

Out of despair the young couple ran to the mountain and hung themselves. A’Rong’s rope however tore so she survived and had to bury Yen Ching by herself. A’Rong carved a swallow on Yen Ching’s tombstone as she hoped that his would fly free like a swallow instead of being tied down to the secular world.

A’Rong then built a small temple, she lived in the woods and never married. A’Rong only had the lone light to keep her company. After A’Rong died, the lone light in the temple would stay lit everyday and that is why it’s called Lone Light Ridge. Some time later people started to call the temple the Come Back Nunnery as they believe that someday A’Rong and Yen Ching may be reunited.

After Grandma Hou Shan finishes the story, Le Chien sadly says that he didn’t realize there was such a sad story behind the Come Back Nunnery. Grandma Hou Shan says that most people will never see the lights of the Come Back Nunnery and those that go out looking for it, often never return. She asks them if they still want to go searching for it, knowing what she just told them. Amber and Le Chien look at each other.

Roll those end credits! That’s the end of DNA Says Love You: Episode 2!
