Valiant

This is the second book in Modern Faerie Tale series by Holly Black which started with Tithe.

This is a book that deals with drug use, people without homes and addiction. There is also a cat death, so you’ve been warned.

In Tithe we got Kaye learning about her heritage and dealing with the dark side of the Faerie. We also learned that light side of court could be just as evil, if not worse than the dark one. In this book we get to see regular humans with differing reactions to all things supernatural.

Val is a runaway, it’s not long before she also becomes a drug addict. The drug is supernatural in origin but the cravings and reckless behaviour leading to deadly consequences is all too real. I enjoyed the book but I would recommend it only to older teens and adults.

I will post this small minor spoiler though, by telling you that Val actively chooses not take the drug later in the book. Roiben does make a cameo appearance in this book but this isn’t his story so don’t go into this book expecting more of Kaye and Roiben because that will be in Ironside. You will need to read this book before Ironside though, so don’t think you can just skip ahead or you’ll miss stuff.
