Keys To The Demon Prison

Wow the 5th and final book of the Fablehaven series. It’s been quite a journey with Kendra, Seth and Hugo.

They all grew and changed as the books progressed. The books are technically for middle graders but honestly, anyone of any age could enjoy them just as much.

We knew that the parents got kidnapped in the last book, having never found out that their daughter Kendra was actually still alive. The Sphinx was getting a lot closer to his goal of opening up the demon prison. The reader however didn’t know until this book about what motivated him. I found the background on the main force behind the Society of the Evening Star to be a nice touch.

I’m super happy that Raxtus my favourite dragon made a return in the book as I was worried he might be a one-off character never to be seen again. That said my hopes of Kendra and my favourite dragon being more than friends didn’t land. Ah.. ghost ships.. I know them well.

Seth has come a long way from the irresponsible kid that defied rules just because he could. He grew up to be rather responsible, even if he still makes some mistakes but to be honest, we all do.

Hugo got a big boost in previous books by gaining a will of his own. I’m not sure I like how Dale was treating this new Hugo but I’m sure he’ll get used to the change eventually.

The one thing I didn’t expect in the book was the unicorn. I should have given that it’s a fantasy novel but somehow it just never really came up before. This last book did tie everything up together nicely and introduced some new depth to our characters.

I loved the journey with this series and I’m sad it had to end but I agree with Brandon Mull that more books in the series would diminish it. Sometimes less is more, these books were designed to be a 5 book series and he did it really well. I definitely recommend it others. I will be getting a physical copy of Fablehaven as part of the BackerKit campaign and if they make more movies I hope to get the rest of the series in the same way.
