The Poppy War

I really struggled with this book. I wanted to like it, we didn’t get along. I spent the first half of the book disliking the main character.

Then the war came and I was just disappointed. I never connected with Rin but I did like Kitay and Jiang.

Rin did have some character growth but not enough to make me like her. There are definitely some strong trigger warnings for this book as it has some graphic violence in the later chapters.

I did appreciate that this book actually dealt with menstruation as many books seem to forget basic biology when writing women so that was nice. It also dealt with the fact that women who don’t want a period or children should have the choice. In this book it was a medication instead of a hysterectomy but it served the same purpose. I’m just jealous that Rin got hers at a younger age than I did.

It’s a depressing read, but oddly realistic even with gods and goddesses. I’m not going to get a physical copy of this book or continue the series because it’s just not for me. It’s well written and I can definitely see why people like it.. but I’m going to pass.
