I’ve finally made it to book 3 of the series. While Vicki has dealt with slowly going blind, vampires, werewolves and demons… now she gets to face off with a mummy!

I think fans of the movie The Mummy will take a shine to this book. Then again maybe not since that was more of a love story in monster clothing and this is pure horror.

In fact this book reminds me in many ways of the first time I read Salem’s Lot by Stephen King. It’s not so much about the monsters being scary but the possibility of the things they do that are terrifying.

In the case of Salem’s Lot it was how easy a small town could be taken over without anyone really being aware of it or caring. In this case it’s a horrible Mummy rising to power and brainwashing people to help. The whole soul sucking thing is just a cherry on top of one scary ice cream sundae.

The first two books were more creepy than scary, probably because the motives were more human. In the first book the creep with the entitlement issues was something from any police drama with a dash of demon thrown in.

The second book gave us werewolves that were trying to fit in and live their life but were being hunted for it because of someone else’s religious beliefs. Those books were nowhere near as terrifying as this one and I think it’s because this one had moments that reminded me of the movie Gothika. I enjoyed the book but I’m just as happy to move onto the next one in the series.
